Emeritus Professor of Medicine

I have been an interventional cardiologist since the inception of this field 40 years ago. I helped develop the field of digital angiography and performed the first cardiac digital angiograms, which is the current standard for all cardiac catheterization laboratories. I was instrumental in developing one of the first intravascular ultrasound devices and performed many of the initial studies with this method of visualizing coronary arteries from inside the lumen. The information obtained from intravascular ultrasound helped expand the use of coronary artery stents to become the standard treatment of coronary angioplasty today. Antonio Colombo and I received the Mason Sones award from SCAI in recognition of this pioneering work.
I am currently an Emeritus Professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.
