Dr. Bates is presently the Innovation Chambion and Leader at WL Gore and Associates. He continues in an teaching role as Clinical Professor of Medicine and Surgery at CAMC/ West Virginia University. He is an interventional cardiologist with vascular medicine and vascular interventional fellowship training. He is the founder of a unique multidiscipline, patient centered vascular center @ Charleston Area Medical Center that houses vascular surgery, interventional cardiology, vascular medicine and interventional neuroradiology. He is also the founder and past director of the CAMC Cardiovascular Medicine Felllowship. He additionally has been involved in medical device innovation with over 60 issued / pending US patents. He has published over 100 manuscripts as well as 20 book chapters and has been the inventor/ founder/ CEO of mutiple start-up companies.
